Helping children make friends at nursery

Children playing a tug-of-war game together.

No child is born knowing how to share a beloved red truck. Social skills are practised — in snack queues, sandpit negotiations, and the hundredth retelling of a disagreement over crayons. Our classrooms are designed as friendly gyms for exactly that practice.

The small moments that teach most

Pouring water for a neighbour, waiting for the swing timer, voting on the storybook — these micro-decisions build empathy faster than any lesson about kindness. Teachers narrate and celebrate each one so children notice their own growth.

Our friendship toolkit

  • Feelings cards. Picture prompts help children name frustration before it becomes a snatch.
  • Buddy jobs. Paired tasks — watering plants, carrying the book basket — make cooperation delicious.
  • Repair rituals. "Check, fix, reconnect": children learn to notice hurt, offer repair, and play on.
"Children don't learn friendship from lectures. They learn it from a hundred gentle rehearsals."

When quarrels happen (they will)

Expect a calm note home, not a blame slip. We describe what happened, what your child tried, and what we'll practise next. Most "phases" fade within weeks once the skill underneath is taught — and we will tell you honestly if something needs a longer plan.
